“She looks just like me,” my five-year-old crooned as she hung over the play mat where her baby sister smiled and kicked her feet. Just the day before my son had compared his baby picture to his tiniest sister and said the same. My mother-in-law inspected her newest grandbaby looking for telltale family signs and was pleased when she found a little divot on the baby’s bottom lip just like hers.
Don’t tell any of them, but baby Grace really looks like me. After birthing two little clones of my husband, it’s about time. More often than not, friends and strangers alike tell me, “She looks just like you.” I grin and say, “You think?” secretly knowing she does.
But why is it that each of us wants to see ourselves in the baby? God made us that way.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27 NIV
God wanted the same thing from us. He made us in His own image, so we would look like Him. He doesn’t look down and say, “Awww. Carol has my green eyes,” or “Alan is tall just like me.” He looks at our heart, and there in the depths of our soul, our Lord looks for a little piece of himself. He searches for resemblance. And when He finds it, He is very pleased – just like I am when I see myself in my baby girl.
God saw himself in David. ‘I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’ Acts 13:22 NIV David had a heart for God. That doesn’t mean David always did what was right, but he always repented and returned to God. It was this true sense of obedience and love for his Lord that pleased God.
The more I see of myself in my daughter, the happier I am. Don’t you bet God feels the same? Like David, sometimes our hearts may reflect our Lord more than others. How much do you resemble your Heavenly Father today?
I just love this post, Carol. My 1st born looked EXACTLY like my husband. Not one iota of my side of the family. When daughter #2 was born, looking like me, my daddy said "She is the prettiest baby I've ever seen." I think that's cause I look like him. And he could see himself in her.
Great analogy about God too. Yay.
And I don't know who she looks like, but she is BEAUTIFUL!
Such a good post! And it is so true don't you know God is so happy when He sees us doing His work and being more like Him. Thanks for sharing.
until next time… nel
That's a great example of how He sees us. xo

Catching up!

Great post, Carol!! And she DOES look like you. She is a DOLL!!
