A Gold-en Adventure

Sep 4

Saturday morning, I awoke with an idea. I told the kids that as soon as they picked up toys and got ready, we would head out for an adventure. You’ve never seen kids pick up toys so fast. I told them we had four clues that we would open up along the way to tell us where we were going. They asked a million questions and couldn’t wait to go.

We got in the van and Faith opened the first clue. Inside the envelope was an index card with the letter “G” and a riddle.

1. Let’s take an adventure and see what we pass,
But before we can go we must stop and get ______.

Obviously, we stopped at the gas station next. After filling up, Colin opened the next clue. This time he found the letter “O” with the riddle.

2. Our adventure will start with a crunch and a munch, Before going too far we’ll be stopping for ________.

After grabbing a quick bite in the drive thru, Faith opened the next clue. She found the letter “L” with the following riddle:
3. Now let’s get on the road, your excitement is bubbling like fountains,
We’ll be heading north, where we’ll find the N. Ga _____________.

Colin had lots of fun trying to guess a word that started with “GOL_”. I wasn’t giving anything away. When we were about half a mile from our destination I gave him the last clue. Inside was the letter “D” and the riddle.

4. If you must know about our adventure, we’ll be searching for treasure. It won’t be too hard, just fun for your pleasure.

We’ll go down in the hills, if the truth must be told. Today for our adventure, we’ll be panning for _________!

Colin quickly realized that G-O-L-D spelled gold! They were both really excited. We went to the Consolidated Gold Mine in Dahlonega. There we went on a tour down in the mountain and found out how they mined for gold. Then we tried our hand at panning for gold. Both of the kids came away with a tiny vial with tiny gold flakes in it from their pans. But the most fun, was sifting for gems. We decided to do that, also. They had a lot of good finds. It was definitely a gold-en adventure!

Matthew 6:19-21
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
