Love Letter to My Child – Part 2

May 16

Some years ago, when my son was in preschool, I wrote a love letter to him on my blog. Since my son is graduating high school this year, I decided to write him another letter – and share it with you.  Click HERE to read the original letter.

Dear Colin,

I love you more than words can express. No matter what, I love you. When you forget to take out the trash on trash day, and we have to pile the bags on top of the can for another week, I love you. When you drop your work uniform on the floor of the laundry room and forget to start it washing and text me from school to ask me to wash it, I love you still. I love you when you forget to bring all your cups down from your room and they grow mold.

You see, I’ve loved you from the beginning. Before you entered this world, God put you in my heart, and I loved you. I love it when you bend down your six-foot-five frame and lay your head in my lap and ask me to scratch your back. I love when you laugh. Your deep belly laugh is one of my favorites, and I can’t help but smile when I hear it. I love when you wrap your arm around the neck of one of your sisters and try to play cool, but I know you love and protect them.

I love your positive outlook on life, but I also love to hear your commentary on things. When I think of all the stories you’ve told us around the dinner table, I smile. You are not only great dinner entertainment, but you make life fun.

I love how you are so fascinated with science and get excited to share something you’ve learned with me and your dad. You make me laugh when you ask for fashion advice from me or Faith. I stand proud when I see the way you’ve learned to treat women. When you stood on the stage receiving your various cords for being an honor graduate, I cried because I was so proud of the man you are becoming.

But as you get ready to head off to college, there is something you must know. There is nothing – and I mean nothing – you can ever do to lose my love. You may make some bad grades every once in a while. And you may make some bad choices; we all do. And while those grades and those choices may make me sad, know this. I will love you always and forever, no matter what. I am your mama. And you will always be my baby, no matter how much I have to crane my neck to see your face.

So when I leave you in that dorm room, and I squeeze the ever loving life out of you and my eyes fill with tears, it’s okay if you laugh at me. Just know it’s because I love you more than I can put into words. I love you infinity.

Mama
